Friday 12th August

Many of you will have noticed that I have not posed a diary blog for several weeks. This failure has been for many reasons most of them relating to health problems/events such as:

  • Very Low blood count
  • Blood Transfusion of 3 units
  • Very Low blood count
  • Blood Transfusion of 3 units
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Bad Fall (unconscious and confused)
  • Significant reduction in muscle strength (unable to climb the stairs even with use of crurthTotal
  • Loss of mobility
  • Loss of Confidence
  • Stair Lift, GT II with “go faster stripes” and spooked wheels.

Because of these events that affect my lifestyle I have decided to change the way I communicate will you. These changes include only reporting mine and Janice’s health changes and significant medication changes relating to myself. Several of you who read my blog are family and very good friends which we know were upset by our unavailability to see them. Not added to the list was the subscription of the Drug Abiraterone which I have been taking for the last three days. The medication comprises 4 large pills of 250 mg each to be taken at the same time each day. Even though this is reportedly a wonder drug I am not being too optimistic. Instead I am going to wait and see if it dose change things in a positive way and I hope I do not have to wait to long. The letter indication that I have been allocated the drug on compassionate grounds brought tears to my eyes as well as a feeling of high spirits and optimism. Janice also had the same feelings I did but I didn’t expect the drug (if at all) until December at the earliest.

Sunday 26th June

By on Jul 14 2011 | Comments (0)

I got up three times during the night with a bad taste in my mouth. I was again on a “so called” empty stomach. I got up at 7 am and did some crosswords as I was not tired. My problem now is getting hydrated again. Article in the Mail on Sunday talked about the danger of mixing drugs and mentioned a combination of Aspirin and Ibuprofen can cause stomach problems. Watched the Grand Prix and then had my 3 – 6 pm afternoon nap. I remained tired and lethargic going to bed before midnight.

Saturday 25th June

By on Jul 14 2011 | Comments (0)

I got up late than normal when Janice got up the answer the phone. It was Dominic who to her that he was the proud father of a baby boy born at 5.30 am weighing 9 lbs and 9 oz. He was named William. This means we have 4 girls and 2 boys as our grandchildren. Because of my hospital commitments we will have to wait until later next week before we can visit them. I feel normal except for slight pain which means my 100 mg of Zomorph twice a day is working. I did some work on the Looe Life Boat Station painting for the Downderry Exhibition. Watched the Grand Prix followed by my 3 to 5 pm afternoon nap. We were picked up by John and Elaine at 6.30 pm for Sarah Hall’s party. Squid Ink was full of family and friends. The four course meal cooked by Sarah was a real treat. It seemed that Sarah was very pleased with my picture of the Squid Ink restaurant. So much so that she got everyone to write their name of the back and anything else they felt appropriate. We shared a taxi home with a couple who were at the party. When we got home I took my medication and watched some TV. Unfortunately when going to bed the taste was too much and I was sick. Because it was over an hour since I took my medication I did not take any extra tablets. Janice and I were in bed by 1 am.

Friday 24th June

I had my blood samples taken at the Downderry surgery at 9.10 am for Haemoglobin and PSA. Janice and I picked up Elaine and John for lunch at Duloe. As a precaution I took 10 mg of oral morphine. After lunch we went to the Island View Café at Hannafore Point for afternoon tea. It was an enjoyable long lazy lunch. I had my 3.30 to 5.30 pm afternoon nap. Afterwards, I did some work on my exhibition paintings the fist being a view of Looe Life Boat Station at Low Tide. I mounted the A3 sized painting ready for our gift on Saturday night (tomorrow). Janice got some wrapping paper and gift wrapped it. I read an interesting article in the Daily Mail about GPs having to produce dying plans for people who have terminal diseases. I read another interesting article in the Daily Mail about ‘Drug Cocktails’ and how they can be fatal. Watched some TV and went to bed before midnight.

Thursday 23rd June

By on Jul 14 2011 | Comments (0)

When I got up the pain in my neck shoulders, lower back, legs and thighs was getting worse so I opted to take some oral morphine. I had my 11.30 am foot appointment at Liskeard Community Hospital whilst Janice went supermarket shopping. My foot was healing well, the best they had seen to date. An appointment was made for Thursday 30th June. On the way back home we collected two framed pictures from Rob Arnold, picture framers. After lunch I produced some painting templates for the village summer exhibition. After my 3 to 5 pm nap I did some painting.

Wednesday 22nd June

By on Jul 14 2011 | Comments (0)

Got up early to take my penicillin tablets as they need to be taken an hour before food. Not as “full as beans” today as I have been over the last few days. After my evening meal I started to experience pains in my neck shoulders, lower back, legs and thighs. However, I did not feel that pain warranted me to take some oral morphine. As the evening progressed I became very weak finding it difficult to stand up from my chair. I went to bed at 11 pm.

Tuesday 21st June

Good nights sleep waking up at 9 am. I had my usual breakfast of two Weetabix with Soya milk and my medication.  Janice and I met Elaine at 1.30 pm for lunch at the Island View Café. As usual I opted for a Tuna and Mayo sandwich and Janice and Elaine opted for the Crab. We had one plate of “Cheesey Chip” to keep us happy as well as slim. After a very pleasant lunch in the sunshine we went for a walk along the sea front stopping from time to time for me to take some photographs for oil painting templates that I needed for my artwork submissions to the Downderry Summer Exhibition starting 8th July. We returned back for afternoon tea. Janice and Elaine opted for tea only but I weekend and had Lemon Curd pie. We went home at around 4 pm stopping on the way to drop Elaine off in Looe and for me to take some more photographs in Seaton. When we got home I downloaded the photographs from the camera and crop a selection as oil painting templates. I had my nap between 5.30 and 7.30 pm.

Monday 20th June

By on Jul 14 2011 | Comments (0)

Got up pain free. After my breakfast and medication I finished off the painting hoping that it would dry for the party at Squid Ink on Saturday evening. The painting will be a gift to Sarah Hall, the ex Chef and Owner of Squid Ink. Telephoned a lady in Wales who’s father has prostate cancer at a similar stage as mine. In conversation she mentioned how when you meet friends and colleagues they ask “how’s your dad” instead of “how are you it must be difficult looking after your dad.” It’s that same thing with Janice. Very rarely do people ask how she is coping. The lady in Wales told me that the drug Abiraterone will be available end on this year. She also told me that treatment from outside the UK could be got for £42,000. At some time in the near future I need the Western Morning News and Local Newspapers to publish an article on how many men’s lives will be lost each month Abiraterone is delayed supported by profiles of those that are at risk such as this woman’s father, my friend Dennis and myself.

Sunday 19th June

By on Jun 20 2011 | Comments (0)

I got up at 9 am and had my breakfast at 10 am. A little tired I stayed in bed until 12 noon. I was not in any pain so it seemed my medication was working. Watched a recording of yesterday’s day 1 of the European two day Athletic event and then today’s event. I had a nap between 5.30 pm and 7 pm. I did some more painting work after dinner until 9 pm, nearly finishing one work of art. I received father’s day cards from all my step and in law children along with cards from their children. Every time I eat I bite my bottom right lip. It is now getting sore. Biting my lip is caused by the numb patch around the lip concerned (similar to the numbness when you have a local anaesthetic for a dentist’s filling). I have had the numbness for over a week so I should see my GP. After my evening medication I watched a little TV and then went to bed. Today was one of those unusual pain free days.

Saturday 18th June

By on Jun 20 2011 | Comments (0)

I got up at 2 am just after I had gone to bed as I was in too much pain. Sat watching TV interspaced with upper body and leg exercises. My pain and discomfort was so bad I thought about dying. My thoughts covered overdosing, jumping and other was of taking my life. Maybe I should visit some suicide sites to see what’s on offer. I also thought about hospices with all their pros and cons. I also thought about everyone who would be affected by my departure and whether they (particularly Janice) were prepared. I eventually went to bed at 4 am. I had difficulty getting to sleep but eventually dosed off getting approximately 5 hours sleep waking at 9 am. At 10 am I had my medication ensuring I took 100 mg of Zomorph and 20 mg of liquid Ibuprofen. The problem with sleep less nights is being very tired and not doing the things you wanted to do during the day such as my painting and PC work.  Both Janice and I had a nap together in the late afternoon. Today was The Great Drag Race in London and I wondered how many men took part in the race, whether my nephews took part and how much money was raised. I must call my sister Fran to find out what happened. Not much more to other than we watched TV and I went to bed before midnight.
